Quarter 2 - Lesson 1:
An Introduction to Morin's Theory of Determination

Lesson 1 of Quarter 2 begins with an introductory study of Morin's Theory of Determination from Book 21 of his Astrologia Gallica. On the title page of the Latin version of Book 21, he summarizes his entire tradition in two short highly compact statements, viz: "The Active Determination of The Celestial Bodies and The Passive Determination of The Sublunary World". In point of fact, these two statements are so highly synthesized as to be almost completely obscure.

This lesson expands upon these two statements to make them meaningful. Morin's Theory of Determinations unfolds the significance of  these phrases by way of a clear, lucid, and rational discussion of the inter-relationship that exists between Signs, Planets, and Houses. Here we have an explanation of these latter that is usually never discussed in contemporary texts of Astrology, or if discussed, it is usually in a very superficial, incomplete, or incorrect way.

Morin's  "Theory of Determinations" rests on three principles
    1. Determinations
    2. Planetary States
    3. Accidental Significators
Specifically, his Theory explains:
  • The Relationship of General Significators to Accidental Significators and
    • Only accepts Ascendant, Midheaven, Part of Fortune, and Planets as General Significators
    • Replaces all other General Significators with Accidental Significators for a particular chart

  • How a Planet is determined by a House
    • In terms of its direction and extent of influence towards the significations of that house.
    • In only four (major) ways

  • A Planet's affect on a House based on its
    • Essential nature, including its analogies
    • Zodiacal State

  • That Planet and the House Ruler are
    • Called the Accidental Significators as they have circumstantially a significance relating to those house affairs for that particular chart.
    • The cause/s (by reason of their nature and state) of the realization, obstruction, or of the loss, once acquired, of the house affairs in question.
