Quarter 2 - Lesson 11: On Aspects - Intermediate Level - Part 3
After we review Morin's discussion on how aspects function, we delve into the
main topic of our lesson, i.e. the need to consider carefully a planet's influence
by aspect from a three fold point of view. We note first that a planet works
through its own nature, and second through its celestial state and any accessory
determinations. And so, if the planet is well-placed by these two considerations,
it brings good results, at least by its benefic rays and if badly-placed it is
harmful, at least by its malefic rays.
But it is Morin's explanation of the third of the 3-fold ways on how a planet
operates (which is by aspects) that once again demonstrates his unrivalled gift
to posterity, that is how to think as astrologers. Morin states in Book 21,
Chapter 10,
"In general, a given planet, by its aspects to the planets or cusps
or through directions to these as signification, brings fortune or misfortune to
the corresponding affairs through its own condition based upon its location and
rulership, as well as the nature of the aspects formed."
Book 21, Section 2, Chapter 9
He gives us an
example on how to synthesize these considerations using the following example.
He states, "Therefore, Mars in the 7th and ruler of the 4th and 11th houses, and
trine the Sun in the MC, will promote the prestige of the native through
litigations, conflicts, spouse, parents and friends. And these will certainly
occur should Mars trine the Sun by direction."
The bulk of the lesson focuses of this third consideration as well as the
ancillary corollaries that fall from this consideration. These include the
importance of noting the application and separation of planets by aspect and
the necessity to consider both the sending and receiving planet in terms of the
above three fold considerations.
We conclude with a discussion of two planets in aspect and how they have a
reciprocal and mutual influence on the affairs of the houses in which they are
located. Morin says "if Saturn/ 8th is opposing Jupiter/2nd as ruler of the ASC,
the opposition of Saturn to Jupiter will color the Jupiterian character and give
it a Saturnian touch. And this particular opposition of Jupiter to Saturn could
indicate death by judicial decision." Therefore, the same aspect always has
various meanings. Which to choose will depend on the question asked by you when
you examine the chart.
The material for this lesson has been drawn from Book 21,Chapter 10 and Book 16,
which has been newly translated by James Holden. Both titles are available from
the AFA web site (www.astrologers.com) and Astroamerica (www.astroamerica.com).
If you do not have copies of these or other of Morin's titles, I strongly suggest
you purchase.
